Biography

Tinine, or Tinen, was a prince of the Abkhazian royal house, a son of King Demetre I, who governed a part of Kartli for his uncle Giorgi I Aghtsepeli and was murdered in the succession crisis that followed Giorgi's death. The Chronicle of Kartli does not give his name; it says only that Giorgi, King of the Abkhazians, marched out, captured Kartli, and left Demetre's son as eristavi of Chikha, and that when Giorgi died, his widow, who had been seduced by the noble Ioane Shavliani, killed Demetre's son, the eristavi of Chikha, and had his brother Bagrat, then a minor, thrown into the sea so that her lover might take the throne. The name Tinen is preserved in the Abkhazian king lists rather than in the chronicle.

That is the whole of the record. Nothing is known of his age, his marriage, or his rule at Chikha. Georgian scholars comparing the Divan with other king lists date his tenure to the 860s, and some have suggested that Tinen and Bagrat were one person, the later King Bagrat I, rather than two brothers; the chronicle's account of one son killed and another escaping argues against that reading. If Toumanoff's chronology for Giorgi I is followed, the murder fell about 878 or 879; other reckonings put it in the early 870s.

His brother Bagrat survived, reached Constantinople, and returned about 887 to kill Ioane's son Adarnase and recover the kingdom, from which the later Abkhazian kings and ultimately Bagrat III of Georgia descended.
