David III the Great of Tao

The most powerful Georgian ruler of his age, Curopalates of Tao and effective overlord of much of Georgia and Armenia. He adopted his kinsman Bagrat III as heir, paving the way for the unification of Georgia. His military support of Byzantine emperor Basil II earned him vast Anatolian territories that he willed to the Byzantines on his death in 1001.
