Latori

Biography

Latori, called Latavri in the Georgian chronicle, was the daughter of the Bagratid prince Adarnase and the sister of Ashot I the Great, and her marriage into the Chosroid house of Kakheti is the earliest recorded union between the Bagrationi and the old royal line of Kartli. She is known from a single episode in the continuation of the Life of Vakhtang Gorgasali in Kartlis Tskhovreba, which relates that Adarnase, a man of the line of the prophet David, came to the Chosroid ruler Archil, received lands from him, and afterward gave his daughter in marriage to Archil's son Juansher.

The chronicle adds that Juansher's mother at first objected to the match, but on seeing her son's bride loved her and blessed her, and it invokes Latavri's Davidic ancestry in justifying the union. Since Archil himself, by the same chronicle, had married a daughter of Guaram the kouropalates, the marriage joined three houses at once: the Bagratids, the Chosroids, and, through Juansher's mother, the Guaramids. The chronicle gives no dates; modern reference works place her birth around 755 and the marriage around 790, but these are estimates.

Juansher died about 807 without children by her, and modern historians hold that his lands then passed to her father, laying the foundation of the hereditary Bagratid domain in Tao-Klarjeti and Javakheti from which her brother Ashot rose to become presiding prince of Iberia. Nothing further is recorded of Latori, neither the date of her death nor any children.
