Biography
King of Kartli from 1606 to 1615, he refused to convert to Islam under pressure from Shah Abbas I of Persia and was imprisoned and ultimately strangled in 1622. He is canonized as a martyr saint by the Georgian Orthodox Church. His refusal to apostatize made him a powerful symbol of Christian Georgian identity.
