Goranduxt

Biography

Goranduxt, or Gurandukht, was the daughter of Archil, the Khosroid prince of Kakheti venerated by the Georgian church as a martyr, and one of the last members of the royal house that had ruled Kartli since Mirian III. She should be distinguished from her aunt of the same name, the daughter of Archil's brother Mihr, whom Archil gave in marriage to Leon, ruler of the Abkhazians. The two women appear a few pages apart in the same chronicle, and the shared name has caused confusion in later genealogies. The younger Goranduxt is named only once, in the sentence with which the chronicle attributed to Juansher closes its account of Archil: he "had two sons, Juansher and Iovane, and four daughters: Gurandukht, Mariam, Mirandukht and Shushan." Her mother was a daughter of Guaram the curopalate, ruler of Klarjeti and Javakheti, so that she descended on both sides from lines the chronicler traced to Vakhtang Gorgasali. The Martyrdom of Saint Archil adds that after Archil's death, placed in 786 by Toumanoff though church tradition gives 744, the family split: Iovane took his mother and two sisters to Egrisi, while Juansher remained in Kartli and Kakheti with two sisters, the younger of whom was Shushan. Whether Goranduxt went west or stayed is not stated, and no source records her marriage or death.
