Ivane

Biography

Ivane, or Iovane, was the elder of the two sons of Archil, the Khosroid prince of Kakheti martyred under Arab rule, and with his brother Juansher he represented the last male generation of the ancient royal house of Kartli descended from Mirian III. He is known only from the Georgian Chronicles: the history attributed to Juansher lists him among Archil's children, and the short Martyrdom of Saint Archil describes what became of him. According to the Martyrdom, when Archil was executed, an event placed in 786 by Toumanoff and most modern historians although church tradition dates it to 744, "he left behind two sons: Iovane and Juansher. Iovane went to Egrisi, taking his mother and two sisters with him, while Juansher and his two sisters remained in the country of Kartli and Kakheti." Egrisi, in western Georgia, was then under the sway of the Abkhazian rulers, whose house was already tied to Archil's family through the marriage of Leon, eristavi of the Abkhazians, to Ivane's cousin Goranduxt, a daughter of Mihr. Ivane appears once more in the same text. When the khagan of the Khazars sent an envoy asking for the hand of his youngest sister Shushan and promising help against the Arabs, Juansher informed "his brother and mother," and together they refused, declaring that they would rather retreat to the Greeks than see their daughter given to heathens. Three years later the Khazar commander Bluchan invaded Kakheti, carried off Juansher and Shushan, and ravaged Tbilisi. The chronicle records nothing else about Ivane, neither a marriage nor the date or place of his death. His mother was a daughter of Guaram the curopalate of Klarjeti, and his brother Juansher, released by the Khazars after seven years, married the Bagrationi princess Latavri and died childless in 807, ending the direct Khosroid male line.
