Mihranduxt

Biography

Mihranduxt, or Mirandukht, was a daughter of Archil, the Khosroid prince of Kakheti whom the Georgian church honors as a martyr, and a member of the last generation of the royal house that traced itself to Mirian III. Like her sisters Goranduxt and Mariam she is known from a single sentence of the Georgian Chronicles, where the history attributed to Juansher concludes its account of Archil by stating that he "had two sons, Juansher and Iovane, and four daughters: Gurandukht, Mariam, Mirandukht and Shushan." Her name was an old one in the family. The same chronicle gives it to the sister of Vakhtang Gorgasali, carried off as a child by the Ossetians and later married to the king of Persia. Her mother, a daughter of Guaram the curopalate who ruled Klarjeti and Javakheti, was likewise counted by the chronicler among Vakhtang's posterity. The Martyrdom of Saint Archil records that after her father's death, dated 786 by Toumanoff although church tradition places it in 744, the family separated: her brother Iovane took his mother and two sisters to Egrisi, while Juansher stayed in Kartli and Kakheti with the other two, one of them the youngest, Shushan. The text does not say on which side of this division Mihranduxt fell, and no source records her marriage, her children, or her death.
