Biography
King of Georgia from 1270 to 1289, he submitted to the Mongol Ilkhanate but was eventually executed by Khan Arghun on suspicion of treason. He voluntarily surrendered himself to save Georgia from Mongol reprisals, earning his epithet 'the Self-Sacrificing'. He is canonized as a saint by the Georgian Orthodox Church.
