Biography
Known in Byzantine history as Maria of Alania, daughter of Bagrat IV she became Byzantine empress as the wife of two emperors, Michael VII Doukas and Nikephoros III Botaneiates. She was a major political figure in late 11th century Constantinople and a patron of the Comnenian rise to power. Her influence helped maintain Georgian-Byzantine relations.
